Usman Gul's Metal AI Secures $4.5 Million Seed Round Co-Led by a16z and Y Combinator

San Francisco — Metal AI closed a $4.5 million seed round co-led by a16z Speedrun and Y Combinator. Founder Usman Gul announced the funding on September 2, 2026. The startup builds an artificial intelligence platform that manages the capital formation process for founders.
The round includes participation from Pioneer Fund, Rebel Fund, Gaingels, Indus Valley Capital, Team Ignite Ventures, and Phaze Ventures. Securing co-lead investments from Andreessen Horowitz’s accelerator and Y Combinator establishes immediate market validation for the new platform.
From Airlift to Metal
Gul built Metal to solve a bottleneck he experienced directly at his previous company. He co-founded Airlift Technologies in March 2019, growing the business to a $120 million scale before shutting it down in July 2022. Prior to Airlift, Gul held early operator roles at DoorDash and Marqeta.
"During those three years of fundraising, our team spoke with roughly 300 investors, and about 80 percent of them were simply not the right fit for Airlift’s stage, sector, geography, or cheque size at the time," Gul noted regarding the inefficiency of traditional capital raises.
Solving the Fundraising Bottleneck
Metal replaces this trial-and-error approach with an AI-native operating system that acts as a smart layer between founders and the venture network. The platform offers three core functions:
- Investor Targeting: Analyzes data to pinpoint the exact investors likely to back a specific startup profile.
- Network Mapping: Charts warm introduction paths utilizing a founder's existing contacts.
- In-App Copilot: Guides founders step-by-step through the mechanics of an active funding round.
Revenue and Growth
Metal secured this seed capital by demonstrating established commercial traction. The startup reports six consecutive quarters of 30 to 80 percent quarter-over-quarter revenue growth. Gul projects the company will reach multi-million-dollar annual revenue by the close of fiscal year 2026.
More than 100 YC-backed founders currently pay for the software, alongside companies from the a16z and Techstars networks. Earlier in 2026, Rebel Fund made a strategic investment to provide its portfolio companies discounted access to Metal’s plans.
Expanding Access for Emerging Markets
Founders in emerging tech hubs like Lahore and Karachi frequently build companies without the concentrated networks found in Silicon Valley. Metal's software maps global venture connections, giving these entrepreneurs direct, data-driven pathways to capital.
The participation of Pakistan-focused Indus Valley Capital highlights a broader shift: institutional capital is tracking local talent as they build infrastructure for global markets. Metal plans to expand its product beyond initial fundraising, ultimately serving as the core operating layer for companies through their entire lifecycle, from first check to growth rounds.
